Can there be a team without a captain or a plane flying sans a pilot or government sans a Prime Minister or a Chief Minister? questioned Nationalist Congress Party Legislator Churchill Alemao as he pooh poohed Adv Uday Bhembre’s claim that the Opinion poll movement was not fathered by any particular leader.
Reacting to Bhembre’s statement that the Opinion Poll movement was led by as many as five different groups and no single individual or leader can take credit for being the Father of the Opinion Poll, Churchill said Bhembre should understand that any team or a movement cannot be led without a captain. “Can there be a ship without a captain. There are certain people who are jealous about the role played by Jack Sequeira. I was young during the Opinion Poll movement and we had all worked for its success. At that time we had heard only one name leading the anti-merger movement and that was none other than Jack Sequeira,” Churchill said.
He also disputed Bhembre’s statement that one group was on the job to convince the Hindu community to vote against the merger, saying that Goans in general, including the Hindus, Catholics and the Muslims had all decided to vote against the merger. I do not think there was any need to convince the Hindus to vote against the merger since the Hindu community too was vehemently opposed to the merger, he added.
