Cong threatens to go on hunger strike over formalin issue

panaji

The Congress on Wednesday threatened to go on a hunger strike after Ganesh Chathurthi over the “unresolved issue of formalin-laced fish” in Goa. The party insisted on stopping fish coming from outside as this was the only way to put to rest doubts of fish being laced with formalin.

Stating that the Congress was dissatisfied with the way the government had dealt with and was dealing with the formalin issue, Congress State President Girish Chodankar insisted that the government was helping the fish mafia to take forward their “illegal business” of transporting and selling formalin-laced fish.

“The people of Goa don’t have any protection against formalin, but the government is giving police protection to trucks that import fish, only to help certain businesses,” said Chodankar.

Congress also demanded that the government resolve the issues of the co-operative societies in the State. Citing examples of the Margao Urban Bank, Goa State Co-Operative Bank, Goa Urban Co-Operative Bank and Mapusa Urban Co-Operative Bank, Girish Chodankar alleged that the government was anti-co-operative societies since many of these did not have BJP supporters at the helm.

“The government is ruining the co-operative movements as there are no BJP people at the helm. It is not bothered about the economy being ruined,” said Chodankar, who sought to remind the government that a lot of work went into the co-operative movement, and that there were many stakeholders involved, like employees, and people who had invested money.

“We urge the government to sit with the managements of these movements and find solutions to their problems.”
