Benaulim and lone NCP MLA Churchill Alemao on Monday slammed the “iconic tourist destination” tag for Colva which was promised in the national budget recently, questioning how exactly Colva beach would be made “iconic” when it was drowning in sewage. Alemao raised the issue when he stood to oppose the motion of thanks for the Goa governor’s address to the Assembly in January this year.
“The sewage of the entire coastal belt comes to the 7.5 MLD sewerage plant in Colva. How exactly will the beach become “iconic”? Will tourists want to come there?,” said Alemao, saying that he had objected to this sewage coming to Colva.
“Works worth Rs 11 crore are being planned on the beach. But the sewage from there, where will it go? We can’t let it go into the sea,” he said.
Further, the legislator also referred to River Sal saying, “You can’t put your leg in the river. It will rot.”
Slamming the “development” that was being planned all around, Alemao said that while development was going on, all aspects needed to be thought of.
Colva Beach is the only beach (in the country) and the only destination in Goa to be included in one of 17 destinations across the country listed in the Union Budget to be developed as “world class tourism destinations.”
