CII-Goa elects new chairman, vice-chairman

The Goa Council of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) elected Atrey Sawant, who is business head of Atrey Engineering Works, elected as the new chairman of CII-Goa Council for the year 2017-18. Sawant also owns Mandovi Drydocks which is into ship-building.

Shekhar Mital, who is chairman and managing director of Goa Shipyard, was elected as the new vice-chairman for the same period.  
Interestingly, both the incoming chairman and vice-chairman of CII-Goa Council now come from shipbuilding industry.   
Speaking on the occasion, Sawant, said, “CII-Goa aspires to have multiple engagements with the central government and the state government for the betterment of industrial sector in the state. Goa has already witnessed several development initiatives under the chief minister, Laxmikant Parsekar, which shows that the state is proactive towards industrial issues.”  
Shrinivas Dempo, from the Dempo Group who has also been the chairman of CII-Goa Council in the past, said, “In the last 5-7 years, most of the job creation in India was in sectors like telecom and finance, which are services industry. Time has come for manufacturing to come to the centrestage. We should be able to do what China has done with manufacturing.”  
He continued, “Public enterprises are already pushing up investments, which should result in more job creation, while CII is facilitating skill building by taking initiatives.”  
Interestingly, CII-Goa and Goa Shipyard have earlier too collaborated on skill building in shipyard industry. The outgoing chairman of CII-Goa, Shekhar Sardessai, said that Sawant has taken over CII at a very important time, as the new state government is expected to take office soon.

Demolition of shacks: NGT directs Canacona dy collector to be present before tribunal

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday directed the Canacona Deputy Collector Kedar Naik to remain present before the tribunal, in connection with the demolition of shacks at Canacona.
