Censuring the BJP-led government for holding back development, Assagao panch Zalinder Gaonkar said the arrogance of the government had reached such a level that it held back panchayat resolutions if it did not have a signature of the local MLA.

“Why should a resolution passed by a local body have signature of the local MLA? Isn’t it a murder of democracy under the BJP rule,” he asked and vowed to work against the Siolim BJP MLA in the ensuing election.

The Assagao panch was speaking at a news conference where a group of citizens, including office-bearers of Siolim Congress Block, came together to dethrone BJP MLA Dayanand Mandrekar and support Goa Forward Party candidate, Vinod Palienkar.

The office bearers of Siolim Congress block, sarpanchas, panchas, former panchas and Zilla Panchayat members came together under the banner of Siolim Constituency Citizens Forum (SCCF) to bring about development in Siolim in future.

“We have come together cutting across party lines to bring about a change in Siolim. For the last 18 years, there has been no development in Siolim,” said Daisy D’Souza, former panch and convenor of SCCF, vowing to unseat the Siolim MLA from the constituency.

Former ZP member, Deepak Dhargalkar said the minister twice laid foundation stone for a playground in Assagao, but the work has failed to take off.

“Siolim has been deprived of basic infrastructure like good roads, regular water supply, uninterrupted power supply and garbage disposal,” he said.

“Our one-point programme is to defeat the incumbent and elect a new person in Siolim,” he said.
