The government-announced lockdown is yet to come into force, but a couple of citizens faced the brunt of police lathis and kicks in Fatorda on Wednesday.
A video that went viral on Wednesday showed Fatorda police station in-charge, PI Kapil Nayak in action, using his lathi to drive away people loitering on the roads and markets.
In one video, the PI is seen using his lathi to drive away motorcycle rider with his lathi. The video also shows the police officer kicks the motorcycle.
In another video, a citizen was heard pleading with the police officer to spare him of the lathis, before he made good his escape.
Chidambar Chanekar, who faced the police lathis, has lodged his complaint with the Superintendent of Police, South on Wednesday evening. He has sought justice and has demanded suspension of the Fatorda PI Kapil Nayak for targeting him without any reason.
“I had just come out of my house with my motorcycle to buy groceries when PI Kapil used lathis against me. I do not know what crime did I commit to invite the police action. I was wearing mask and there was no pillion rider on my bike. I was going to the market to buy milk for my children,” he said.
While demanding action, Chanekar wondered how the police could beat up people when the government has still not gone for a lockdown and has kept essential items including groceries open.
