The July 9 meeting was the first meeting of the newly-elected Council, backed by the MLAs of Margao and Fatorda, Digambar Kamat and Vijai Sardesai respectively, wherein the City Fathers adopted a host of resolutions to streamline solid waste management at Sonsodo and in the city. Tendering of the door-to-door waste collection
One of the first decision adopted by the newly-elected Council was to re-tender the door-to-waste collection in the city. Pending the re-tendering, the City Fathers resolved to give three-month extension for the existing door-to-door waste collection contractors. Sadly, as it turned out, the door-to-door waste collection has not been tendered till date when the work runs into crores of rupees and the existing contractors are still on the job.
Contractor to handle the Sonsodo waste treatment plant
Till Saturday, when the portion of the Sonsodo wall gave in, the Margao civic body did not appoint any contractor worth the name at Sonsodo for the treatment of the daily waste. At the July 9 meeting, the MMC had resolved to rope in a contractor for the treatment of the day-to-day wet waste for a period of one year.
Contractor to cart out the existing waste stacked inside the plant
In another resolution, the Council on July 9 last had decided to appoint an agency to cart out the existing waste running into thousands of tonnes before a contractor is appointed to treat the daily waste. Not even a tonne of the stacked waste was lifted out of the plant till date.
No treatment worth its name at Sonsodo
No treatment of the daily waste worth its name was carried out at Sonsodo during the last eight months, sources said. And, the reason attributed for the non-treatment was the absence of logistics, pushing the blame on the non-functioning machinery and the delay in procuring the spares.
Two 25TPD waste treatment plants
The July 9 meeting of the Council had discussed the proposal to set up two 25TPD bio-methanation plants at Sonsodo as a long-term solution to resolve the Sonsodo imbroglio. Ask the Margao Municipal technical section over the fate of the two plants, and officials would reply back saying the proposal did not receive the technology nod from the government, thus causing the delay.
