A temporary shed is being erected to relocate the existing fish vendors, as work on the new Vasco fish market is set to begin shortly.
A Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) team comprising Chairperson Damodar Kaskar, Councillors Ameya Chopdekar, Prajay Mayekar and others on Wednesday inspected the site where work is being carried out to erect a temporary shed.
Kaskar told reporters that the MMC building renovation work was already being carried out, while work on the fish market had also begun.
"The MMC transferred an amount for these projects to the GSUDA which is executing these works through a contractor. The South Goa collector has also allotted us land to relocate the existing fish vendors.”
“This temporary shed is being set up on prime land earlier in possession of Dev Damodar Trust for a long time. The land was taken back after the contract period was over and it was handed over to the revenue department, who later handed it over to the MMC to erect the temporary shed,” said Kaskar.
The MMC chairperson said the contractor has already begun work on the temporary shed.
“We inspected the work and we will soon shift the existing fish vendors to this place, before taking up work to construct a new fish market," said Kaskar.
MMC Councillor Ameya Chopdekar said the work is being expedited with the support of Urban Development Minister Milind Naik, Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho and Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida.
“Fish vendors at the existing market have been struggling and we want to give them a state-of-art new fish market with all facilities and amenities,” said Chopdekar.
