PANAJI
The North Goa District and Sessions Court on Friday granted anticipatory bail to Environmentalist Dr Claude Alvares and his associate Rahul Basu in the case of symbolic locking of the Mines and Geology Department.
Pronouncing the order, Judge Irshad Aga directed Alvares and Basu to furnish bail bonds of Rs 10,000 each and also asked them to report to the Panaji police for four days from Monday next.
The duo had approached the court after Panaji police had summoned them for inquiry in the FIR booked following a complaint by the Mines department.
Alvares and Basu were part of a group of activists who were protesting against the government’s failure to recover dues of illegal mining operators. After the protest they had proceeded to the nearby Mines department and locked the premises symbolically before handing over the keys to the police personnel present.
