It has happened again, the second time in the last one month as water entered houses and business establishments in the low-lying areas of the city during Friday night’s heavy showers.
While residents of the migrant inhabited Cine Lata colony had to undergo sleepless night after rain water entered their houses late Friday, water entered the business establishments at the old market area, including a medical store, hair cutting saloon, fast food centre and other shops. The rain water is also believed to have entered the Chapel at the Old market area, which has seen flooding year after year.
Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, who visited the Cine Lata colony, said this is the second time in the last one month that water has entered the houses on Friday night. “The Konkan railway authorities have desilted the storm water nullah, but the situation has not improved as the underground nullah is apparently blocked along the way,” he said.
Meanwhile, former Chairperson Savio Coutinho has said that with the desilting of drains having not been completed in ward No 20, residents of Colmorod area have been subjected to immense hardships on account of water-logging.
Friday night’s heavy showers saw water entering into houses as the drains were not cleaned. “The entire compound of one Josephine Andrade, behind GP School at Colmorod got flooded and water entered into the low-lying parts of their house,” Coutinho informed.
The four-lane road from Sirvodem junction up to Kiran Steel was flooded with water as the road side drains are clogged to the brim. Coutinho blamed the authorities for lack of foresight and monsoon preparedness.
