PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has assured that Goa’s only sugar factory, the Sanjivani Sugar Factory, will be reopened after remaining shut for the past five years.
Speaking at the 84th Annual Convention and International Sugar Expo 2026 in Goa, Sawant said the state was proud to host the international event despite the closure of its lone sugar factory and assured that the facility would be reopened after the expo.
“After the expo, we will definitely reopen the factory. Next time, we will definitely have a visit to the sugar factory with all the dignitaries,” Sawant said.
The International Sugar Expo 2026 is being held alongside the 84th STAI Annual Convention from August 18 to 20 at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium. The event brings together farmers, technology providers and stakeholders from the sugar and allied industries to showcase innovations and technological developments.
Sawant also highlighted the contribution of sugarcane farmers to the economy, particularly through ethanol production. He said farmers were increasingly contributing to the production of ethanol used in E20 fuel, describing them as moving from being “food providers” to “fuel providers”.
He said technological advancements and innovation have transformed the agriculture sector and expressed confidence that the sugar industry would also adopt modern technology to improve its efficiency and contribution to the economy.
