Chief Minister Pramod Sawant attended the concluding function of Lokotsav-25 in Canacona on Sunday.

CANACONA

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Sunday congratulated the people of Canacona and appealed to them to welcome the proposed Kushavati district, saying it will bring overall development to the region.

Speaking at the concluding function of Lokotsav-25, Sawant said that Kushavati will be among the 120 Aspirational Districts recognised by the Central government. This status, he said, will help the new district get special focus and open many new opportunities for development.

“I congratulate the people on the formation of the new Kushavati district. When I announced the third district, Kushavati, it was welcomed by the people of Canacona, Sanguem, Quepem and Dharbandora. All four talukas have accepted this decision with an open heart,” he said.

Sawant said that whenever a new district is formed, the government plans for it carefully. “We do not force any programme on the people. A new district means guaranteed development of infrastructure and human resources. There will be a separate collectorate, a separate SP office and many new government offices,” he explained.

He added that the new district will also benefit the youth and women in a big way. There will be a separate district hospital and a medical college, which will make health services easily available to local residents. The government also plans to set up a separate skill development centre so that young people from the area can get proper training and find jobs closer to home.

Tourism in the region is also expected to grow after the formation of the new district. “With better administration and facilities, tourism will further flourish. There will also be a separate Rural Development Office to look after village-level issues. In the future, it is possible that an officer from Canacona itself will become the district head,” Sawant said.

Calling it a golden opportunity for the people, he urged Canconcars not to miss the chance to be part of the new district. “This is a great moment for Canacona because of the Kushavati district,” he said.

The Chief Minister also informed that the state government has placed a demand of Rs 500 crore with the Central government for infrastructure and overall development of the Kushavati district. This package will include a new road connecting Canacona to the district headquarters, which will improve travel and trade.

Sawant said that Minister Ramesh Tawadkar will soon make presentations to explain the benefits of joining the new district. “It is always better to move into a new district from an old one. We have included Canacona in Kushavati keeping in mind the development of its people. Those who want to oppose can continue to do so, but this decision has been taken for the future of Canacona,” he added.
