Chief Minister Pramod Sawant expressed strong support for the NDA resolution to conduct a caste-based census, calling it a “step in the right direction.”

The CM made this statement following his return to Goa after participation in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Chief Ministers’ Conclave, which was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Sunday.

Addressing the media, Sawant emphasised that the proposed census will provide a clear and comprehensive picture of the social and economic status of every community in India.

“This is a step in the right direction. The need of the hour is to gain an accurate understanding of where different communities stand in terms of social and economic progress. A caste-based census will help us understand these disparities more clearly, and allow for better-targeted interventions,” he said.

The Chief Minister noted that understanding these nuances is crucial to formulating more effective policies and ensuring that resources are allocated in a way that addresses the needs of all groups.

In his statement, Sawant also highlighted the significance of the NDA meeting, which discussed various national issues, including governance, development, and security. The conclave aimed to align the priorities of state and central governments and enhance collaboration between them for the nation’s progress.

Meanwhile, Sawant also said that he raised the issue of revival of Khazan land during the Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog on Saturday last week. “During the meeting, different issues across the country were discussed. I raised the issue for revival of Khazan land and for financial support,” he said, expressing confidence in getting the Centre's support.

In its proposal, the State has urged the Centre to provide financial assistance to revive 10,000 hectares of khazan paddy lands to provide livelihoods to people by boosting basic activities such as agriculture, pisciculture, and salt panning.
