Speaking on the issue during his reply, Parsekar informed the House that the tribunal has refused to grant interim relief in the form of allowing the diversion of Seven TMC to the Malaprabha basin as sought by Karnataka.
“Goa’s contentions have been upheld. It means that Goa’s claims have been valid and the people of Goa have been holding on to a correct position all this while,” Parsekar said.
He expressed thanks to the additional Solicitor General of India Atmaram Nadkarni who he said researched and built the case well.
Speaking earlier, Minister of Forests and Environment Rajendra Arlekar welcomed the decision not to grant any interim relief to Karnataka.
“I am very happy that Goa’s contentions have been upheld and now have the sanctity of being agreed to by the Tribunal. It is a good move for the people of Goa as well as for the people who live in the area of the Mhadei basin,” Arlekar said.
When asked about Goa’s demand to impose a 10-km long buffer zone along the Karnataka side, while Goa was maintaining only a 1-km long buffer zone, Arlekar said that it was justified because Karnataka is a large state and has to include the catchment area of the Mhadei River.
