CM: Hike in duty on feni, liquor to be reconsidered

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday said he would reconsider the excise duty hike on liquor and would direct the excise commissioner to restructure the slabs after a delegation of liquor traders met him to explain their grievances.  

“They have met me asking that some rates be reduced, saying that in comparison with other States ours is higher. Considering their request we will rethink. I will ask the excise commissioner to recalculate,” Sawant said.  

With regard to the hike in duty on feni, Sawant said that too would be reconsidered.  

“For feni we were not earning much revenue in any case, so it will not make a big difference. Yet we will also rethink that decision. That was introduced in order that there be a minimum slab,” Sawant said. 

Earlier, the Goa Liquor Traders Association members met Sawant at his residence and submitted a  memorandum to lower the excise duty on liquor which was increased during  the recent budget.
