Pernem locals have welcomed Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar's announcement that the proposed Mopa airport will provide jobs only to Goans.
The government has acquired 97 lakh square metres of land to build an international greenfield airport at Mopa plateau, and the estimated cost to construct the airport is over Rs 3,300 crore. The government claims that the airport will boost development in Pernem taluka, and unemployed youth will get an opportunity.
Sarpanchas, deputy sarpanchas, panchas and councillors from Pernem taluka have expressed satisfaction over job-related assurances by the government.
ZP member Arun Bankar said it will boost tourism on the beaches of Pernem taluka and many hotel projects will come up in the region.
“Job opportunities will be created by the airport, which will benefit the citizens of Pernem taluka,” said Bankar.
Former Morjim sarpanch Dhananjay Shetgaonkar said along with development, there will be job opportunities for the unemployed. “The process to build the airport should be started without wasting any time,” he demanded.
President for People for Mopa Organization, Devendra Prabhudesai said to make the airport a reality, their organisation will be in service till the end.
“Our organization is also making efforts to give proper compensation to those whose lost their land for the airport project,” he added.
Councillor Upendra Deshprabhu said Pernem taluka will have a new look. “Priority-wise, there will be job opportunities and I have full confidence that the BJP government will be able to finish this airport,” said Deshprabhu.
Expressing his views, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) vice-president Rajan Satelkar said before starting the work on the proposed Mopa airport, there is a need to impart proper training to staff, workers and officials.
Citizens and other social workers of Pernem taluka have also welcomed the international greenfield Mopa airport and are supporting it.
