Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has assured that the historic Mormugao Fort will soon see major restoration and development, with the project expected to be completed within two years. Sawant made this announcement following a joint inspection of the fort on Thursday evening, accompanied by Councillor Shraddha Amonkar, representatives from the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA), officials from various government departments, and local residents.
Sawant emphasised the significance of developing Mormugao Fort, a site steeped in history and potential for tourism. “I have personally come to inspect Mormugao Fort, even though MLA Sankalp Amonkar is campaigning in Maharashtra. He has been tirelessly following up on this issue and has raised it multiple times in the assembly. While past joint inspections have been conducted, this is my first personal visit, and I have seen the urgent need for improvement here,” he stated.
The CM highlighted the lack of facilities at the fort, which currently has limited access and amenities for visitors.
Councillor Shraddha Amonkar described the restoration project as a “dream come true,” especially for the local community.
“Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar has raised this issue in every assembly session, consistently pushing for the fort’s development. This is not only a historical site but also a beautiful location overlooking the Arabian Sea, with deep significance dating back to when Mormugao was the capital during the Portuguese era. Its development is crucial to boost tourism and create local employment opportunities,” she said.
One of the main issues has been limited access to the fort, often restricted by the MPA. Amonkar expressed hope for a dedicated entry route.
“The fort’s access is often closed off by the MPA, restricting visitors. We need an uninterrupted access route that allows locals and tourists alike to visit. We are grateful to CM Sawant for his personal involvement and to the archaeology department for initiating this inspection. And special thanks go to MLA Sankalp Amonkar, whose deep emotional attachment to this fort has driven his efforts,” Amonkar noted.
“The restoration and better access to this historic site is truly a dream come true not only for MLA Sankalp Amonkar but for all the locals, who eagerly await the transformation of this fort into a landmark with enhanced facilities for both tourists and residents,” she concluded.
