CM Sawant defends private universities amid local opposition

PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has strongly criticized those opposing the setting up of private universities in the State.

Addressing a World Tourism Day event, Sawant firmly defended the establishment of private universities emphasizing their potential to enhance job opportunities and expand educational offerings for young people in the state.

Sawant announced that four private institutions have already submitted proposals to set up campuses in Goa, with more anticipated in the future.

He urged critics to consider the long-term economic benefits these universities could bring to Goa and its youth, asserting that they would position the state as a vital centre for education and employment.

In Tivim, a proposed private university on comunidade land has ignited significant local opposition. Residents, including prominent Gaunkars, fear that the development could threaten their environment, infrastructure, and cultural heritage.

In a collective effort, over 400 concerned citizens submitted a formal objection letter to the Tivim village panchayat, voicing their discontent with the project. This submission coincided with the deadline for filing objections or suggestions regarding the controversial proposal. The villagers have also called for a special gram sabha to publicly address their concerns.
