Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday stated that traffic problems in Porvorim would be reduced substantially once the proposed flyover is constructed.
“Work to widen roads will be taken up prior to construction of the flyover. Residents will have to bear the dust till the pillars of the flyover are constructed,” said Sawant.
He was speaking at Porvorim after inaugurating the Porvorim Traffic Cell in the presence of Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte, Saligao MLA Kedar Naik, Director General of Police Jaspal Singh, Superintendent of police (Traffic) Bossuet Silva, Dy Superintendent of Police Sidhant U Shirodkar and panch members of Penha de Franca panchayat.
The government plans to widen the 4.5 km stretch of highway in Porvorim between the Gauri Petrol pump and the Socorro circle, with an elevated flyover/highway proposed at Porvorim to tackle traffic congestion. Funds for the project have been allotted by the Centre.
Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte said the Traffic Cell had been a long-pending demand of residents in Porvorim constituency.
“Earlier, Calangute Police would look after traffic management in Porvorim, but traffic along the Panjim-Mapusa stretch of the NH66 highway has increased immensely. With the Manohar International airport in January 2023, there will be further increase in the traffic. Hence, there was a need for a separate Traffic Cell at Porvoirm,” said Khaunte.
DGP Jaspal Singh welcomed the gathering and Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Bossuet Silva later proposed the vote of thanks.
