CM says no politics on garbage, Sonsodo site to be cleared

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant told the House that the government will give top priority to clear the garbage dumped at Sonsodo so that a garbage treatment plant can be installed at the site.

Sawant, on Wednesday, also said that the Margao Municipal Council has to take responsibility in tackling the garbage woes at Sonsodo.

“We do not want to do politics with garbage. The issue is to clear the entire garbage at the site. We will give permission to clear the site and rebuild the shade. Once the site is cleared we will be able to install a waste treatment plant there. The Solid Waste Management Corporation and the DMA are monitoring the situation and we will resolve the issue,” Sawant said.

Speaking during the discussion on supplementary demands, Fatorda MLA, Vijai Sardesai and Margao MLA, Digambar Kamat demanded immediate steps to resolve the garbage issue at Sonsodo.

“An expert committee led by Scientist Sharad Kale had visited Sonsodo and prepared a report last year. The decision taken by the committee should be carried forward. We do not want to intervene in the decision. Whatever decision you take will be final,” Sardesai said.

The Margao MLA demanded a meeting of the high-powered committee to resolve the problem.

“There is a need to install a plant immediately at Sonsodo. We should resolve it on top priority. The CM should call a meeting of the high-powered committee,” Kamat said.

The CM informed that Scientist Sharad Kale has seen the site and had even offered suggestions.

“I feel the MMC should also take some responsibility. We had cleared the site once. But every time the civic body is dumping the waste at the site,” he said.
