GTDC’s proposal was presented and the councillors after a discussion approved the proposal for setting up a hotel in the government property at Palolem, where an ice factory existed earlier.
Approval of this hotel project assumes significance, as one of the councillor Divakar Pagui, had opposed the project.
The residents especially fishermen community had threatened to come on to the roads to oppose the setting up a hotel and had demanded to revive the ice factory, as they had no ice facility in Canacona.
When asked after the meeting, Divakar Pagi said there’s no point in opposing the project, as the GTDC after obtaining all the permissions submitted the file to CMC. “If we refuse, they will invoke the deeming clause to obtain the licence and complete the work,” Pagi said.
In another decision, CMC decided to divert the golden jubilee funds of Rs 2 crore, to renovate/develop the fish market and the areas around the GSUDA vegetable market.
CMC also resolved to increase door-to-door garbage collection tax by Rs 200.
“The new tax structure due to increase in garbage collection fees will be effective from April 1,” informed CMC Chairperson Prathana Naikgaunkar.
The councillors after lengthy discussion on the construction of another hotel project at Palolem, also resolved not to renew the construction license post May if the builder does not clean and clear the blocked natural waterways.
The councillors opined that there could be flooding of the area, if the natural water flow in the area is blocked.
