After being in the firing line over accusations of mismanagement of garbage at the Garbage Treatment Plant in Dumane-Canacona, the Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) has suddenly begun taking steps to cover the untreated garbage.
Following threats of a chain hunger strike by Jagruk Canaconkars, newly elected CMC Chairperson Chaya (Bharati) Komarpant sought explanation from the chief officer for the failure in tackling garbage in a proper manner.
Sources disclosed that the chairperson sent a note to the chief officer to know how and why garbage was only dumped at the Dumane plant and no action had been taken to treat it.
The chairperson also sought to know who was responsible for this lapse and why had the CMC remained a mute spectator till citizens threatened a hunger strike over the situation.
The chairperson has reportedly sought a detailed action report from the chief officer for the situation when the council is scheduled to meet on June 21, sources said.
Shortly after residents and activists raised an alarm over the deteriorating situation at the Dumane GTP, the CMC engaged a JCB to bring together several garbage heaps into a single dump inside the GTP compound at Dumane.
On Saturday, municipal workers were seen covering the huge garbage dump at GTP with a tarpaulin.
Meanwhile, in another note, the CMC chairperson is also reported to have sought details of pre-monsoon works carried out by the council.
The council is reportedly blaming the administration for failure in executing the works, which should have been addressed before monsoon.
Sources pointed out that the CO after giving instruction to officers concerned, has proceeded on leave, but the staff had failed to get the works completed, sources said.
