Coconut plucker dies after tree uproots in Consua

A 22-year-old man died after a coconut tree he had climbed to pluck coconuts suddenly bent and got uprooted, causing him to fall and sustain serious injuries at Consua.

The deceased has been identified as Nawin Soreng (22), a resident of Benaulim and a native of Jharkhand.

According to police, Soreng had been hired to pluck coconuts in a private property at Consua. While he had climbed the coconut tree for the work, the tree unexpectedly bent and got uprooted from the ground, causing him to fall to the ground and suffer injuries.

Following the incident, he was immediately shifted to the South Goa District Hospital at Margao for medical treatment. However, due to the severity of his injuries, he was later referred to the Goa Medical College and Hospital at Bambolim. Soreng later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital while undergoing treatment.

Police said the body has been preserved at the Goa Medical College for medico-legal formalities.

Verna police have registered a case of unnatural death under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.

Further investigation is being carried out by PSI Carey Fernandes of Verna police station under the supervision of PI Anand Shirodkar and the guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.
