OLD GOA
A coconut tree fell on the power lines at Merces on Tuesday night and took down five poles with it, resulting in power outage in the area as well as disrupting traffic along the Merces-Chimbel route.
Villagers informed The Goan that the incident took place at around 9 pm on Tuesday when the coconut tree fell and with it, five electricity poles also fell down on the road.
“Luckily at the time of the incident, no vehicles or persons were passing by, due to which no injuries were reported,” a villager said.
The incident forced traffic to be diverted through an internal road in Merces.
The Goan was further informed that a fire brigade arrived at the spot and cleared the fallen coconut tree on Tuesday night itself.
A scooter was damaged early Wednesday morning as the rider, unaware of the fallen power poles, rammed against one of the poles. He, however, was unhurt in the mishap.
“I was passing along the road from Chimbel towards Merces at 5 am when I dashed my scooter against the fallen power pole, resulting in damage to my scooter,” the rider informed The Goan.
The electricity department personnel had to work till late Wednesday evening to reinstall the power poles as well as the power lines.
