The South Western Railways (SWR) has completed the double tracking and electrification of the 33.16-km stretch of the Alnavar-Londa railway route has been completed and the inspection and trial run of the electric locomotive was carried out successfully on Tuesday. Train engines that used to chug all these years will soon be zooming past on the tracks in the region.

Commissioner of Railway Safety A K Rai conducted the statutory inspection of newly electrified Alnavar-Londa section. The electrification of the 33.16-km section of Alnavar-Londa is a part of the Hosapete-Hubballi-Londa-Vasco electrification project.

“The project is being executed by Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL). The Commissioner of Railway Safety inspected the electrified section and checked various safety parameters,” SWR Chief PRO Aneesh Hegde said.

“The commissioner inspected Over Head Electrification (OHE) depot at Alnavar, sub-sectioning and paralleling posts (SSPs) at Tavaragatti and Devarayi, foot overbridges, level crossing gates, bridges, curves in the section. He also inspected Tavaragatti, Devarayi, Shivathan and Londa stations.”

A speed trial with an electric loco was conducted from Londa to Alnavar during the inspection, he added.

Electrification will significantly improve mobility of trains on SWR and strengthen the rail network in Karnataka. In addition to reduction in pollution, efficiency of railway will improve due to shift from fossil fuel to electricity.

SWR Divisional Railway Manager Arvind Malkhede, Principal Chief Electrical Engineer Manoj Mahajan and senior officials also joined the inspection.
