Toddy tappers under the banner of All Goa Toddy Tappers’ Association have demanded the roll back in the government decision on coconut tree, warning that the toddy tappers will be forced to the streets if the decision is not withdrawn immediately.
Association President Gaspar Afonso has strongly condemned the Goa government’s amendment to re-classify the coconut tree, saying the decision will lead to indiscriminate cutting of coconut trees by land developers and will also lead to destruction of Goa’s socio cultural identity.
“Huge chunk of Goa’s population, both Hindus and Catholics, have toddy tapping as their traditional occupation and the indiscriminate cutting of coconut trees will mean a loss of livelihood for them and their families," Gaspar said.
Pointing out that Goan feni has earned recognition worldwide, Gaspar said this move of the government will only help in the extinction of feni. “National and international tourists visit Goa and try the Goan cuisine as it's amongst the best in the world. Vinegar is made from toddy and is one of the ingredients in many traditional Goan dishes. Our coconut oil has also many health benefits," Gaspar said, while calling for immediate roll back in the government decision.
