Project Nirmalaya seemed to have helped to bring about awareness amongst citizens on disposal of flower and other waste during the ongoing Ganesh Chathurti festivities.
Launched with the aim to make Ganesh festival eco-friendly, bags of flowers used in the celebration of Ganesh festival has been collected from the Nirmalaya waste disposal sites across the commercial capital.
Margao Municipal Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said the MMC workers has so far collected four jumbo size bags of flower waste from the disposal sites. He said the civic body will go for the composting of the waste from Tuesday.
The Chief Officer informed that bins were placed at the Ganesh immersion sites at half-a-dozen places across the city with a plea to the citizens to drop the Nirmalaya. “We are happy that people used the bins to drop the flower waste. Our workers have collected the waste and will be composted on Tuesday,” he said.
Agnelo added: “We can safely dispose Nirmalaya through natural, controlled composting. The compost generated can then be put to use”.
Saying that the disposal of Nirmalaya has an effect on water bodies, the Chief Officer said that disposal of Nirmalaya results in contamination of water bodies not only from rotten flowers, but also thorugh the chemicals used in pesticides on flowers.
In the year 2019, Project Nirmal Nirmalaya was initiated by the students of Popular High School in a small way during the Ganesh festival to inculcate amongst the students the core values of social service as well as emphasis on effective waste management. Last year, the project was immensely successful inculcating values of safe disposal of Nirmalaya.
