MARGAO
The South Goa district authorities finally settled for the SGPDA parking land as the venue for the July 8 Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) hearing for South Goa, but not before District Collector, Ruchika Katyal, IAS issued directions to the Margao Municipal Council to clean up the eyesore within eight days.
The South Goa Collector along with Additional Collector, Surendra Naik, inspected the SGPDA parking lot in the market complex on Saturday to check the feasibility of the site for the July 8 hearing. During the inspection with the MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes, the Collector found a mound of waste at the far corner of the parking lot on the western side.
After discussions with the MMC Chief Officer, the Collector issued directions to the civic body to get the waste cleared within eight day-time, well ahead of the public hearing scheduled early next month.
The Chief Officer is believed to have assured the district authorities that the MMC will deploy men and machinery to lift the waste.
It could not be ascertained whether the district authorities have proposed any measures on the sanitation front on the day of the hearing, more so as the lone Sulabh toilet block is found shut, forcing vendors and shoppers to answer nature’s call in the open around the place.
The Goan had highlighted that the waste mound at the corner of the SGPDA parking posed a nuisance and health hazard with leachate flowing from the dump.
