MARGAO
With the three accused in the Betalbatim gangrape case remanded to judicial custody, the Colva police has moved the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Margao to hold an identification parade in the case, even as acting district Police chief, SP Dinraj Govekar informed that the police is in the process of building a strong case against the three accused from Indore.
Sources in the know said that Colva PI Filomena Costa is believed to have dispatched a letter to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Margao with a plea to hold the identification of the three accused at the earliest. Sources said the SDM in most probability will designate one of the magistrates to conduct the identification parade, wherein the victim will be asked to identify the accused persons from amongst a group of persons.
A senior police official said the identification parade is always held when the accused persons are remanded to judicial custody so that there’s no pressure from the police on the accused. “Before the identification parade, the identity of the accused is being protected by the police. This is one reason why the faces of the three accused were hidden with masks since their arrests till date,” the police officer stated.
In the meantime, the Colva police is on the job to dispatch a number of items, including clothes for forensic study at the Forensic laboratory at Hyderabad.
Acting district police chief, SP Dinraj Govekar informed that the police has all the evidence to prove the gangrape case against the accused persons.
“The evidence which the police has collected is strong which will keep the police in good stead in the court of law,” he added.
