The state government has earned Rs 2,427.3 crore by way of all commercial taxes, including Goods and Services Tax (GST) from April to December 2017. At this level, state’s commercial tax collections were 15% up in 2017-18 compared to the previous year. This information was revealed in the recently tabled Economic Survey.
The central government had rolled out GST pan-India from July 1, 2017 onwards. Therefore, commercial tax collections from April to June
include central sales tax (CST), value added tax, entry tax, entertainment tax and
luxury tax.
Most of these taxes were subsumed in GST from July 1. But VAT and GST on five petroleum products and alcohol for human consumption continued even after GST roll-out.
In the six months from July to December 2017, the state earned Rs 910.7 crore from GST. This includes Rs 547.2 crore from state government share of GST (SGST), Rs 260.3 crore from inter-state GST (IGST) and Rs 103.2 crore from the central government as compensation.
The compensation is provided by the central government to the state government if the latter’s tax collections don’t grow by 14% year-on-year.
The other major contributors to the state’s commercial taxes kitty were entry tax (Rs 153.7 crore collection), VAT (Rs 118.5 crore collection), CST (Rs 67.2 crore collection), luxury tax (Rs 58.3 crore collection) and entertainment tax (Rs 52.4 crore collection).
