Residents in Agarwada, Chopdem and Parsem in Pernem taluka on Wednesday formed the Parsem Kruti Samiti, as part of growing opposition to the change in postal code at the local post office.

According to locals, Agarwada, Chopdem, and Parsem villages have traditionally come under the Pernem Post Office and had been using the pin code 403512 for a number of decades.

They claimed that the pin code was suddenly changed to 403517, which falls under the Siolim post office.

The Parsem panchayat convened a meeting of locals from the three villages at 5.30 pm on Wednesday, to oppose the change in the pin code from 403512 to 403517.

Those addressing the meeting included Parsem Sarpanch Ajay Kalangutkar, Sunita Bugde, Ajit Morajkar, Madusudan Satardekar, Swapnil Naik, Devendra Prabhudesai, Gurudas Pandey, Ashok Lohar, Ravindranath Holkar and Krishna Dangi.

Speakers at the meeting claimed that this change in postal code would affect about 15,000 people in the three villages, as it would compel them to make changes in their addresses and in their documents like Aadhaar card, voter identity card, PAN card, various certificates, and other documents.

Later, the Parsem Kruti Samiti was formed to oppose the change in postal code and the committee consists of Devendra Prabhudesai (president), secretary Ravindranath Holkar (secretary) and Laxmikant Gawandi (treasurer).

A signature campaign will be taken up and a memorandum will be sent to various authorities, including Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar, North Goa MP Shripad Naik, and ZP members.
