In response to increasing dog bite incidents, the Assagao panchayat has issued a public notice prohibiting residents from roaming in public places with specific dog breeds considered aggressive.
The directive aims to enhance public safety and prevent further attacks.
Sarpanch Hanumant Naik stated that certain breeds, including Pit Bulls and Rottweilers, have been banned in the country and their presence in public spaces poses a risk.
“We request residents who own these breeds not to leave their pets unattended or roam with them in open public areas. If found violating this directive, the offense will be punishable,” Naik warned.
The announcement follows a recent incident where a resident of Assagao suffered injuries after being attacked by a Rottweiler.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim, the police booked the dog’s owner for public endangerment, citing negligence in handling the aggressive pet.
Authorities have emphasised that pet owners must take responsibility for their dogs by ensuring they are properly restrained when in public.
The panchayat’s notice is expected to serve as a preventive measure to avoid further incidents and promote responsible pet ownership within the community.
The local administration has urged residents to adhere to the new regulations and cooperate with authorities to maintain safety.
Officials have also hinted that stricter measures may be introduced if violations persist, ensuring the well-being of both residents and pet owners.
