The election process for new managing committees for 34 devasthans (temples) in Bardez, for the triennium 2025-27, is set for February 9, with the Shree Dev Bodgeshwar Devasthan in Mapusa attracting the most attention.
A highly competitive contest has emerged, with three groups vying for control of the managing committee.
In addition to the Shree Dev Bodgeshwar Devasthan, elections are expected to be closely contested at several other prominent temples, including Shree Shantadurga Devasthan in Candolim, Shree Siddeshwar Devasthan in Chapora and Shree Lingarbhat Devasthan in Parra.
However, all eyes are on the Bodgeshwar temple, considered one of the most revered and popular temples in the region.
At least three heavyweight contenders have formed separate panels to capture the top posts at the Shree Dev Bodgeshwar Devasthan.
The outgoing president, Anand Bhaidkar is seeking a fourth consecutive term, but facing stiff competition from his former secretary, Vaman Pandit and former president Mahesh Rane, who is also contesting for the presidency.
“Money power is the main attraction for people to fight for positions in the managing committee. The Bodgeshwar temple’s turnover runs into crores due to substantial donations from devotees,” said Jawaharlal Shetye, a resident of Mapusa.
The managing committee elections are governed by the Mahajan Act, which does not specify any term limits for candidates.
This has led to criticism, with some, like Shetye, advocating for a rotation system to allow fresh leadership.
“The temple is a place of worship, not a political party,” Shetye added, suggesting that new faces should be given a chance.
The elections will be administered by the respective taluka Mamlatdars, who oversee the devasthans, with Bardez Mamlatdar Anant Malik making arrangements to ensure a smooth election process.
Observers have been appointed from various taluka offices to monitor the proceedings, while the local police forces have been alerted to maintain order during the election process.
The police staff from Mapusa, Calangute, Porvorim, Saligao, Colvale, and Anjuna stations will be deployed to ensure the peaceful conduct of the elections.
