The Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) led by its leader Ajay Kholkar started a door-to-door awareness drive in Chimbel against the multi-dwelling project planned near Hindu crematorium at Xirent.
The awareness drive started on Wednesday night and will continue till Saturday to muster support against the project at the adjourned gram sabha, which will be held on Sunday.
Speaking to The Goan, Kholkar informed that the awareness drive aims at educating the people on how the project will be detrimental to the villagers.
“The project proponents have not shown the crematorium as well as the road leading towards it, in the plan,” Kholkar stated, while adding that in the future the villagers would not be allowed access to the crematorium if objections are not raised now.
“The crematorium is used by the ST population of two wards comprising over 4,000 population and if access is denied the tribals will have no other place to cremate the dead,” Kholkar added.
Further, Kholkar said that the project proposes over 50 plots which will bring in more people from other communities.
“This will ultimately lead to the ST population getting marginalised and with the change in demography the reservation for STs would get affected,” he pointed out.
Other RGP members who participated in the awareness drive included Reghana Kundaikar, Avinash Shirvoikar, Tushar Priolkar, and others.
Pamphlets were also distributed among the locals to help understand the gravity of the situation.
