Cuncolim residents have raised concern over hill cutting activity in a private property just behind the Cuncolim Industrial Estate.
After the residents informed local MLA and Opposition leader Yuri Alemao and the Cuncolim police, they have demanded seizure of the machines engaged in the activity.
When contacted, Yuri pointed out that he tried to check the issue with the district officials, only to be informed that the activity is being carried out by the Konkan Railway Corporation. In fact, Yuri pointed out that the authorities have maintained that the KRC is authorised to carry out the activity under certain laws and rules in force. “I am still trying to verify from higher authorities under what provision of law in the KRC are exempted from the rules in force,” Yuri said.
Local residents led by Aviraj Desai, however, contended that the massive hill cutting activity will cause damage to the environment. He said the heavy machinery is not only cutting the hill, but is breaking the boulders and transporting the same by trucks.
