Hundreds, if not thousands, of black and green coloured garbage bins are lying dumped in a shed at the old market garage, throwing up questions whether the bins lying in the shed are surplus after distribution to the households or that the bins are still awaiting distribution to the city households.
Questions are being raised in the corridors of the civic body why the bins, which were reportedly supplied by the government, have not been put to use. “Should we assume that the bins lying in old market shed are all excess ones after distribution of the bins to each and every city household,” an official questioned.
He demanded to know whether all the 40,000-odd households in the commercial capital have been covered with the waste collection bins for wet and dry waste collection.
Last time round, sources said the civic body had handed over the bins to the City Fathers for distribution to the households in their respective wards.
When The Goan contacted Margao Municipal Chairperson Pooja Naik to shed light on the waste collection bins dumped at the Old market garage shed, she said the bins have been stored there for distribution to the households, before COVID hit the State.
“The Municipality had handed over the first lot of the bins to the City Fathers for distribution in their wards. We had plans to distribute the remaining bins around 3-4 months ago before COVID raised its ugly head. Since we were all preoccupied with other work, the bins continued to be stored in the old market area,” she said.
The MMC chairperson, however, promised to look into the matter, find out the number of balance bins remaining in the shed before distributing the same to the households.
