Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) members and workers confronted the Director of Technical Education (DTE) Vivek Kamat on Friday, alleging favouritism in the admission process for the MBBS course.
The Congress members who confronted Kamat included GPCC Vice President Sankalp Amonkar, General Secretary Janardhan Bhandari, North Goa District President Vijay Bhike, spokesperson Amarnath Panjikar, Surendra Furtado and Youth President Varad Mardolkar.
Chaos prevailed at the DTE and a police team had to be dispatched to maintain law and order.
The Congress delegation claimed that the income limit for MBBS admission under reserve category for students of economically weaker section (EWS) had been mentioned as Rs 3 lakh in the prospectus published by DTE.
On completion of first round of admission, the income limit for EWS was raised to Rs 8 lakh as per the reservation policy of the Central government.
The Congress delegation claimed that the State government had not notified the revised reservation limit in advance to all students in their prospects and alleged that this was done to facilitate a relative of the chief minister to get an MBBS seat.
Kamat refuted the allegations and mentioned that the central government policy of reservation has been adopted by State government and after its adoption, it was published in the Official Gazette.
“There was total transparency in the admission procedure and no favouritism has been done to accommodate any particular candidate,” said Kamat.
However while speaking to media persons, the Congress members claimed that Kamat could not give a satisfactory reply as to why policy was adopted after publication of the prospectus.
