Congress leaders from Nuvem have on Saturday refuted reports that the Congress leadership had approached a defector promising nomination of his candidate for the upcoming election for the Nuvem ZP seat.

Party leaders also defended the party’s decision to nominate Venicia Carvalho and Anthony Braganza for the Colva and Nuvem ZP seats respectively, saying it is part of Congress’ focus on young leadership in the country.

Congress party leader Everson Vales questioned the defector’s statement that the Congress party betrayed him by promising to nominate a particular candidate for Nuvem. “With what face is this defector accusing the Congress for betrayal. Is this not the defector who had betrayed not just the Congress, but the 10,000 voters of Nuvem constituency, who had voted him as an MLA,” Everson questioned.

Refuting reports that the Congress had approached a traitor to field a candidate, Everson said the candidates for the Nuvem and Colva ZP seats have been finalised as per the system put in place by Congress top leader Rahul Gandhi and implemented by GPCC chief Amit Patkar. “The Congress did not go to a traitor for a candidate. We have a system in place where the block recommends the candidates after inviting names of prospective candidates. Both Rahul Gandhi and Amit Patkar have laid focus on promoting young leadership. These people are misguiding the public as the Congress is winning both the Nuvem and Colva seats with thumping majority,” he said.

As far as Colva ZP seat is concerned, Everson said people of Colva will come to know who will sweep the ZP polls, saying Congress candidate Venicia Carvalho has been far ahead of the election campaign.

Nuvem block Congress president Morison Rodrigues said the media briefing has been called to introduce the Nuvem ZP candidate Anthony Braganza since the party will not be able to cover door-to-door campaigning due to paucity of time.
