MARGAO
The Congress on Sunday accused the BJP government of trying to sabotage the concluding programme of the Goy Rakhonn Yatra and prevent party leader Rahul Gandhi from attending the rally.
Addressing the media just hours before the concluding meeting at the Margao Cricket Club (MCC) ground, Congress Goa desk in-charge Manikrao Thakare said the party had initially planned to hold the concluding programme of the yatra at the historic Lohia Maidan in Margao. However, he said, the Margao Municipal Council’s chief officer rejected the application to hold the yatra and meeting at Lohia Maidan on the grounds that the venue had already been reserved, forcing the Congress to organise the rally in the parking lot of the MCC ground.
“This only goes to show that the Goa BJP government has done what the BJP is doing across the country: sabotaging the plans and programmes of Rahul Gandhi,” he said.
He added, “Rahul Gandhi is not afraid of the BJP’s attempts at sabotage. Nothing will stop him from fighting the BJP to save the Constitution of India. He has the support of the people of the country and Goa.”
Thakare profusely thanked the people of Goa for extending wholehearted support to the Goy Rakhonn Yatra, saying the feedback received during the yatra showed that people in Goa were looking for a change in 2027.
Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao said a “tsunami” would sweep the BJP out of power in the 2027 Assembly elections, citing the massive response to the Goy Rakhonn Yatra. “Many say they could see the undercurrents against the BJP during the yatra. These are not just undercurrents, but a tsunami that will sweep the BJP out of power in the upcoming polls,” he added.
GPCC chief Girish Chodankar said the BJP government had finally been forced to bow down and grant permission for the concluding programme of the Goy Rakhonn Yatra.
“Since Rahul Gandhi confirmed his participation in the yatra, the BJP government tried to sabotage the programme by putting spokes in the way, but in vain,” Chodankar said.
