MARGAO
The Congress party on Monday slammed the government and the police over the rising number of crimes against women in the State.
Addressing the media at the South Goa District Congress office on Monday, GPCC General Secretary Manisha Usgaonkar charged the government with paying lip service to women’s empowerment and safety by holding events and programmes.
Referring to the gang rape of a mentally challenged woman at Cansaulim after her abduction from the Margao KTC bus stand, Manisha questioned whether women are really safe in the state of Goa. “This government only talks about Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao, but has nothing concrete in place to protect women from criminals. Where were the police agencies when the mentally challenged woman was abducted from Margao and gang-raped at Cansaulim?
"Where is the police patrolling at the bus stands and in public places? Where is the women’s police station and the Pink Force? Why have these agencies failed to stop the rapes and molestations of women taking place in the state of Goa?” she asked.
She added: “Do you think any woman would dare step out at night after the gang rape of the mentally challenged woman? Instead of tightening security by deploying manpower, the government is involved in job scams.”
Demanding to know whether the guest house where the woman was gangraped complied with the directions issued by the District Collector on tenant verification, Manisha asked what action the government was taking against the guest house that allowed criminals to sexually assault the woman.
