Cong to move court seeking stay on ward reservation

Amonkar says will ensure 33 per cent women candidates in Mormugao constituency

Cong to move court seeking stay on ward reservation

VASCO
GPCC Vice President Sankalp Amonkar on Sunday said that the Congress will approach the court against the ward reservations declared for the upcoming civic polls and try to get a stay order on the same.

Amonkar further said immaterial of the reservations, Congress would do justice to the women in Mormugao constituency and maintain the 33 per cent reservations policy while fielding a minimum of 3 women candidates in the 9 wards of the Mormugao constituency for the upcoming civic polls.

“We will challenge the reservations order in the court and we are hopeful that the court will intervene and give us justice. We are directly blaming the Urban Development Minister Milind Naik because such reservations have never been witnessed in the history of Mormugao constituency and this seems to be politically motivated and done in a pick and choose fashion to suppress the opposition,” said Amonkar.

Hitting out at the BJP, Amonkar said that though BJP had initiatives like Nari Shakti,  Beti Padao Beti Bachao and Women empowerment,  their own cabinet Minister Milind Naik had ensured that there was not even a single seat reserved for the women in his own Mormugao constituency.

“This is injustice to women in Mormugao constituency despite having 52 per cent women voting.  These women will soon teach the BJP a good lesson for sidelining them in the civic polls. It looks like the BJP needs the women only during meetings and I wonder why their Mahila Morcha team is quiet and not questioning Naik on this reservations and injustice done to women,” said Amonkar.

Amonkar said that Congress will do the due justice to women of Mormugao constituency and place three women candidates in the civic polls.

“In 2010 and 2015 we had reservations for women in Mormugao constituency but this time though there is no reservation for women but we at Congress will do the justice and place three women candidates from Mormugao for the municipal elections. This 33 per cent reservations was declared during Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure as the PM and since then women are getting a chance to represent in all the elections including mainstream elections and today we have seen that several women have gone to become legislators and Union ministers as well,” said Amonkar.
