PANAJI: The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) has alleged that the government is planning to privatise the new Captain of Ports jetty, Betim Jetty and Old Goa Jetty, along with three proposed floating jetties for which tenders have already been issued.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, GPCC Working President Sunil Kawthankar alleged that three additional floating jetties are proposed near Kala Academy, Mahavir Garden and the Parshuram statue, while another floating jetty, referred to as a ‘Yacht Station’, is proposed near Divja Circle.
“Whose money is the new Captain of Ports building being built with? BJP’s? No, it is being built with taxpayers’ money. Those who pay IT bills, utility bills, buy petrol and vegetables, pay house tax - their money has built the new Captain of Ports building, and now they want to privatise it,” Kawthankar said.
He further alleged that the proposed floating jetties would be used by casinos to park their yachts.
Kawthankar also alleged that the controversial marina project, which had faced opposition from the public, is being brought near Divja Circle under the new name, ‘Yacht Station’.
He warned that the proposed jetties could further increase traffic congestion in Panaji, particularly with Merces Circle already witnessing congestion.
Kawthankar also raised concerns over the possible impact on the Mandovi river, alleging that increased activity could lead to greater river pollution and affect the availability of fish.
