Congress announces Leon as Davorlim ZP bypoll candidate

MARGAO
Even as the Congress announced its candidate Leon Raikar for the ensuing Davorlim Zilla Panchayat bypoll, the BJP is yet to unveil its candidate for the seat to date.
The BJP has shortlisted two candidates -- Paresh Naik and Satyavijai Naik -- for the Davorlim bypoll and had left it to the State leadership to zero in on the party candidate.
When The Goan called Navelim MLA Ulhas Tuenkar to shed light on the party candidate for the Davorlim ZP bypoll, he said the party is expected to finalise its candidate in a day or two. “The local party had recommended the names of two candidates -- Paresh Naik and Satyavijai Naik -- for the seat. It is now up to the State leadership to take a final call,” Tuenkar said.
The bypoll for the Davorlim Zilla Panchayat seat has been necessitated following the resignation of outgoing member Ulhas Tuenkar after his election to the Goa Legislative Assembly from Navelim.
The BJP had twice won the Davorlim ZP seat, with party leader Ulhas emerging triumphant on both occasions.
Sources in the ruling party informed that the BJP is expected to go all out to retain the Davorlim seat, taking advantage of the Lotus symbol. Though the BJP had suffered some setbacks in the recent panchayat elections in Davorlim and Rumdamol, the party leadership has exuded confidence to retain the seat.
The Congress camp, on the other hand, has nominated Leon Raikar, who had joined the Congress after quitting the Trinamool Congress Party.
Leon, who was the Navelim Block TMC president, had quit the Mamata Didi-led party with an eye on the Davorlim bypoll.
The Aam Aadmi Party is another political party, which has set its eyes on Davorlim. Party leader and former Aquem-Baixo sarpanch Siddesh Bhagat has been found moving in the Davorlim ZP constituency in the last few days to mobilise support in his favour. The party, however, is yet to formally announce its candidate for the Davorlim bypoll.
