Congress camp puts up brave face, but lacks confidence

Doubts remain over whether the Congress can pull off a coup under the feet as the Supreme Court ordered floor test is scheduled to take place on Thursday shortly after 11:30am.

Congress leaders however continued to maintain that they had a ‘strategy’ up their sleeves which they said they hoped would work even as the mood of the Congress camp remained subdued over the chances that the trust vote scheduled for this morning.   
While calls of ‘we have the majority’ and ‘we will prove it on the floor of the house’ which echoed on Tuesday were missing on Wednesday with All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary Girish Chodankar saying: “The place to prove the majority is on the floor of the house.”   
Congress MLAs had gathered at a city hotel amid talk that the party could not hold its flock together. On the other hand however, reports emerged that the Congress MLAs will refuse to take the oath as an MLA until their demand for a change in the pro-tem speaker is met.   
Party insiders have informed that the Congress best chance is to win over BJP MLAs who could be sidelined given the priority given to alliance members but that such an arrangement could be used in destabilising attempts later this year.   
Speaking to reporters, CLP president Chandrakant “Babu” Kavlekar said that he did not expect this government to last long, which indicated that the Congress’ plan was not to immediately destabilise the current coming together of forces.
