Congress, GFP inch closer towards stitching alliance

MARGAO
The Congress and Goa Forward Party have moved closer towards stitching an alliance after leaders of the two parties had another round of meeting Wednesday night.

Sources said the Congress party is ready to concede three seats of Fatorda, Mayem and Mandrem to the Goa Forward. Sources, however, said the Congress and Goa Forward haven’t decided yet on the San Andre seat, for which the regional party has made a strong claim during talks with the principal opposition party.

Sources said the two parties while agreeing on the three seats of Fatorda, Mayem and Mandrem has left a decision on San Andre seat on hold. They, however, are believed to have agreed to do a survey in San Andre seeking feedback on the popularity of the two parties in the constituency.

When the media sought to know from the Goa Forward chief Vijai Sardesai on the fate of the Cong-Goa Forward alliance, he said the talks have moved forward after another round of discussions. He, however, has left it to the leadership of the senior partner to make an announcement on the alliance.

“Let the decision on the alliance come from the mouth of the Congress leaders. You can call up Congress Goa desk in-charge, Dinesh Gundu Rao and Opposition Leader Digambar Kamat to find out the fate of the alliance,” he said.

Sardesai added: “The talks have been proceeding forward favourably. Yes, we have had successful talks on the alliance so far.”

When questioned whether he has any other plan if the alliance does not go through, Sardesai shot back, “Why plan otherwise when the talks have been going in a favourable manner. Since people are also anxiously awaiting the fate of the alliance, it is in the fitness of things the Congress leaders make an announcement.”
