The Congress is gearing up to strengthen the party in Fatorda, the constituency represented by Goa Forward Party chief Vijai Sardesai, ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
This became apparent on Sunday when Fatorda figured in the list of Congress blocks dissolved by Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) chief Girish Chodankar. While the party chief has announced plans to shortly constitute the block committees in question, the focus has shifted to Fatorda for the simple reason that relations between the Congress and Goa Forward Party have hit rock bottom after the regional party stitched an alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party last Sunday.
Since then, the Congress leadership has been on a warpath, accusing the Goa Forward Party chief of abandoning the Congress in the past, including the regional party’s decision to support the BJP government headed by then Chief Minister late Manohar Parrikar.
In fact, the GPCC chief has unveiled plans to field a strong candidate against Sardesai in 2027 in Fatorda, going to the extent of saying that the party may even field South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes against the Goa Forward Party chief.
Against this backdrop, the latest move by the Congress president to dissolve the Fatorda block committee assumes significance, raising questions about how the party will go about strengthening the Fatorda block Congress committee ahead of the upcoming polls.
