The Congress on Wednesday questioned the handling of the road-rage complaint involving Rahul Faldessai, son of BJP Cumbarjua MLA Rajesh Faldessai, after the complainant withdrew the complaint following an apology by the accused with police closing the inquiry.
Congress spokesperson Amit Palekar questioned how the matter was dealt with under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), alleging that the accused was effectively allowed to walk free after apologising.
“BNSS does not allow an accused to go scot-free. But the BJP MLA’s son was allowed to go scot-free after saying sorry,” Palekar said.
He also questioned whether the complainant was under pressure to withdraw the complaint. “Probably, there was pressure on the complainant not to file the case,” he alleged.
Palekar also criticised the broader law-and-order situation in Goa, saying, “Goa is turning into Mirzapur.”
Meanwhile, GPCC working president and MLA Carlos Ferreira raised concerns over women’s safety under the BJP-led government.
Ferreira said slogans such as “Nari Shakti” and “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” would have little meaning unless women felt safe.
He also referred to the Supreme Court’s suo motu cognizance of recent crimes against women in Delhi-NCR and questioned the effectiveness of law enforcement and accountability in ensuring women’s safety.
