Raghu Gomes, tenant of plot 219/1 in Morombi O Grande, Tiswadi on Friday filed a contempt of court petition against Krishna Tewary and Jose Braganza who disregarded rights of tenants under the Goa Agricultural Tenancy Act 1964 and allegedly started constructing a road through the
property of Gomes.
Aam Aadmi Party leader of environment Sidharth Karapurkar told ‘The Goan’, that the party, who has been following up the case of Gomes with the authorities, in order to help uphold his rights, on Thursday met up with Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Paramaditya to ask him to intervene in the matter.
Paramaditya later instructed DySP Nelson Albuquerque to handle the matter. Albuquerque has already warned Tewary and Braganza that they cannot construct in the tenant’s land, according to Karapurkar. He also alleged that Braganza and Tewari have destroyed hundreds of cashew trees in the property in order to start work on the road.
Though Gomes has been a tenant of the property, Braganza, the original owner of the land, sold the land to Tewari without settling Gomes. Gomes took up the case with the civil court, which he won. Braganza and Tewari then approached the High Court who did not accept their petition. They further approached the Supreme Court who disposed of the case, thus upholding Gomes’ right to the land in 2012.
