PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar said that within 10 days all things will be put in place such as putting up signboards, reflective tapes and proper illumination of roads where construction along the Patradevi to
Bambolim highway is in progress.
Dhavalikar said, contractors have been instructed to follow all safety measures while doing construction work of roads, adding that joint meeting
of contractors and PWD engineers has been called after taking cognizance of many complaints from
commuters.
Goa-Mumbai highway work from Patradevi to Panaji (Bambolim) is being jointly executed by Ms Vencatrao Infra Projects Private Limited and Navyug Engineering Company Limited.
The two phase project from Patradevi to Karaswada and Karaswada to Bambolim is being done simultaneously by the two contractors. Total cost of this project is around Rs 1,500 crore.
In the project, one new bridge will be built at Colvale and also some flyovers are being built at Greenpark and Binani junctions. Also, service roads will be built at several places along the highway.
Patradevi to Karaswada work is being executed on a war-footing but in some sectors it is lethargic causing grave inconvenience to
commuters.
“It is unfortunate that the construction company which is doing such huge work is not following public safety measures properly,” said former sarpanch of Virnoda, Sitaram Parab.
“Travelling at nights along the road under construction is becoming dangerous. There are no signboards displayed ‘caution’ along the road. Barrels filled with tar are kept haphazardly on the road which are invisible posing danger to vehicle users,” Goa Road Safety Forum founder and convenor Dilip Naik, said.
The forum has decided to run a drive to put reflecting tapes to the tar barrels and demanded that the Goa government’s Road Safety Council inspect the construction sites along the highway and instruct the contractors to abide by the safety rules.
“There is no scientific approach while broadening
of roads,” convenor Naik added.
