With PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar on Monday confirming that the stretch of highway between Cortalim and Verna had to be closed to complete the ongoing bridge work, the NGO Savera said any traffic diversion would be a good excuse for government staff to reach office late.

Hitting out at the PWD for maintaining silence on the planned major diversion of vehicles plying between Panaji and Margao for a prolonged period, NGO Savera Convenor Tara Kerkar said: “Had it not been for The Goan report, the road closure plans would have been a closely guarded secret and would have been suddenly enforced on innocent motorists.”

“With the closure of the stretch of highway to complete the bridge work, any diversion of vehicles would be a good reason and an excuse for government staff to reach office late, further inconveniencing people.”

Kerkar demanded that the bridge works between Cortalim Circle and Sharayu Toyota showroom should be carried out at night, allowing people to use the road during the day.

“The PWD should think about the people and not just act on any proposal received by the contractors. If the time sought is for a year, there are high chances that this work could drag on for more than a year,” Kerkar added.
